The Colors of the Flag
Above is the giant Colombian flag flying high above Cartagena on top of the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas.
Interpretation
According to the current interpretation, the colours signify:
Yellow: represents the richness of the Colombian land.
Blue: represents the seas on Colombia’s shores.
Red: represents the blood spilled on the battlegrounds by the heroes who gained Colombia’s freedom.
Other variations on the interpretation of the colours exist, such as, “Yellow, for the sun and land of the people. Blue, for the water that holds up the people and finally, Red, for the blood shed by the people who fought for the independence of Colombia.”
Although there are no regulations stating the shape of the flag, it traditionally is established at 2:3 with the yellow taking up half the flag and the red and blue sharing the second half.
Differences
Of note that the Venezuelan and Ecuadorian flag are similar to the Colombian one. This happens because these three nations (under the names of Guayaquil, Venezuela and Nueva Granada) formed, back in the 1820s, the Great Colombia Republic (GCR), and then adopted the Mirandinian-Venezuelan tricolori. The ratio of this flag (and the Venezuelan flag), however, differs from its sister flag: it’s 2:3, whereas the Ecuadorian flag is 1:2.The state flag, as happens with Ecuador and Venezuela, also sports the country’s Coat of Arms.
