El Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona (The Tayrona National Natural Park) lies at the Caribbean coast near Santa Marta in Colombia. It has some of South Americas loveliest coastline. This little, delightful spot is located about 30 minutes from the city of Rodadero, with beautiful beaches, hammocks to rent for the night, food, water and surf (be careful, though; there is a strong riptide – experienced surfers only!). Additionally, you can get a guide to take you to a native village in the nearby mountains.
The park presents a biodiversity endemic to the area of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range presenting a variety of climates (mountain climate) and geography that ranges from arid sea level to 900 meters above sea level. The park covers over 11 square miles of maritime area in the Caribbean sea and some 58 square miles of land.
Getting in, out and around is tricky business, so best to know the basics before you go. For an NYT travel story on some of the history behind this beautiful locale, go here.
